Discussing retirement with your family can be overwhelming but we’re here to help.
Downsizing and making the decision to move into a community village is a big decision, and one that affects the whole family. Discussing retirement with your family can be overwhelming but we’re here to help. In this edition, we share practical ways to talk about retirement living with your loved one, tips to help them feel supported, and why starting the conversation sooner can make all the difference.

Making the decision to move into a community village requires many considerations and often brings significant change. It’s natural that starting the conversation can be challenging.
The key is to ease into it, and make sure your loved one feels supported and reassured. This is their decision, guided by their preferences and values, and what matters most to them. For many, community village living is about letting go of home maintenance and daily stress, and instead, enjoying greater convenience, comfort and support as needs change.
Starting the conversation now allows for greater planning time, creating an exciting process that offers your loved one more time to explore the options available for their next chapter, finding the perfect fit!

One of the biggest benefits of planning ahead is reducing the fear that can come with uncertainty or sudden change. Feeling rushed can make the retirement decisions far more stressful than they need to be.
Adjusting to the idea of downsizing and navigating the retirement journey can be overwhelming however, explaining how this is an opportunity for your loved one to embrace greater freedom, security and convenience, with access to onsite support, can help navigate this stage.
Community village living means enjoying a retirement free from the stress of home maintenance, giving your loved one more time to do what they enjoy. Whether that’s staying active, embracing the village’s vibrant activities calendar, or simply relaxing, the possibilities community village living offers are endless. By removing pressure and unrealistic timelines, you’ll give your loved one the space they need to consider their options with confidence.

This decision will take time and by having an open conversation now, you’ll allow your loved one the time and space they need to find the retirement living solution best suited to their needs.
It’s important they understand the conversation comes from care and support, not urgency. Reassure them that they remain in control and that any decision will reflect their needs and preferences.
Whilst the conversation with your loved one will be ongoing, it’s important you give them space to consider their desired lifestyle, allowing for an informed decision.

By getting ahead of the conversation, you can avoid crisis decisions driven by unexpected changes. Instead of feeling rushed, your loved one can explore options with less stress.
Having greater time to compare villages, understand what’s on offer and imagine their future lifestyle helps build confidence and excitement. It also reduces the risk of regret and supports a smoother transition into community living.
